Podcasts have clearly become one of the most influential tools that shape the anecdote of founders in contemporary business culture. With the traditional tools, such as interviews or press releases, founders do not have the full scope to freely express their thoughts on their history, problems, or the intricacies regarding the scaling up of their organizations. It remains more formal, or so the perception extends, providing the illusion that one has direct access to the person, not the brand. However, one cannot help, nevertheless, wondering what one makes out of the rapidly expanding scope and influence of such discussions. Are we getting the true trade-off or insight into the authentic type of leader, or rather the more refined type of strategic integration?

One such incident that can be referred to here includes the latest episode of a podcast where Deepinder Goyal was hosted by Raj Shamani. In the course of the discussion, the latter spoke extensively and candidly about the problems faced by the leadership organization, the issue of co-founders leaving, and other related problems faced by the organization in terms of its scale. However, the focus of the larger audience and the internet remained not on the discussion or the comments made by Deepinder, but rather on the small device that was spotted close to the latter’s temple during the time of the interview. The focus of the audience, although unintentionally, highlighted the fact that the discussion and the explanation that it provided took a new turn altogether in terms of the perception of the subject.

However, the importance of this particular moment is in understanding the way in which the otherwise minor detail impacted the whole story. The fact that the device was there placed Goyal in the image as intellectually curious, experimental, and forward-thinking without doing it in any manner that resembled self-promotion. Sometimes, the way in which this conversation is perceived is the key takeaway, even if it was not discussed. Sometimes, casual conversations hold Implicit Meaning Because it was unfiltered, the conversation was not necessarily thought out in the same manner.

A parallel can be drawn with Nikhil Kamath, the co-founder of Zerodha, due to similarities which can be drawn between podcast appearances. For instance, Nikhil Kamath, the co-founder, tends to elaborate on the choices he made, aside from challenging the traditional perception or definition of the word “success.” Therefore, the reflection can be considered based on the fact that Kamath tends to discuss experiences that he has had and highlighting them mainly. His content can be considered reflective as a result of having presented the thoughts with simplicity. Kamath’s thoughts can be considered reflective since the presented content can easily invite reflection, making the perception or definition of trust extremely high.

What lends more strength to this notion is that there is a significant similarity between what Kamath believes as an individual and what is believed by Zerodha as an organization. The emphasis placed by him on simplicity, being independent, and being a long-term player is something this organization is already known for. Hence, authenticity, besides boosting an individual’s reputation, is also useful for boosting an organization’s reputation.

While engaging in such talk, it is also important to note that such talk is seldom neutral. Talk around founders is a deliberate choice when it comes to the platforms they use, the guests they talk to, and when they talk to them. Small acts, unintended movements, and/or statements can eventually become a story or a talk around those movements and statements. Circumstances can turn out differently from what they intend to be.

This, however, does not necessarily mean there is insincerity on the part of the founders. The feelings, as relayed through these stories, are indeed legitimate. Nevertheless, as far as authenticity in relation to podcasting, in relation to the technology of today, there is, indeed, an inherent link between authenticity and intention. Having an open conversation does indeed humanize or personalize the leader, or rather, is more associated with an aspect by which the leader, as well as organization, is viewed. Having an authentic, albeit open, conversation does, indeed, have some intent, as opposed to insincerity, as opposed to authenticity itself being at odds with it.

Ultimately, leadership communication isn’t really about what’s being said in a particular situation, it’s actually about what’s happening afterward, what impressions are left, and how all these are impacting our perception of leadership in some form. By speaking from their heart, founders end up not only sharing their tale with the world; at some unconscious level, they’re impacting leadership perception as well.
