PGDM Finance Eligibility
Share

Any three-year graduate with 50% aggregate and a valid CAT, XAT or GMAT score is eligible for a PGDM in Finance. There is no separate academic requirement for the finance specialisation — the criteria are identical to every other PGDM track at AICTE-approved institutes.

The PGDM finance eligibility requirement in India is a bachelor’s degree of at least three years in any discipline with a minimum of 50% aggregate (45% for reserved categories under AICTE norms), plus a valid score in CAT, XAT or GMAT. Final-year students may apply. Work experience is not required. And no, you do not need a commerce degree, a maths background or a finance certification to be eligible.

That last point is the one most aspirants get wrong, so the sections below unpack it properly. You will also find what the admission process actually involves stage by stage, what two years cost including hostel and mess, what the finance curriculum covers, and what graduates earn. Where a figure is published officially, we say so. Where the public sources disagree, we say that too.

PGDM Finance Eligibility at a Glance

If you are scanning rather than reading, this table is the whole answer.

Requirement What it means Applies to you?
Academic qualification Bachelor’s degree of minimum three years, in any discipline, from a recognised university Mandatory
Minimum marks 50% aggregate for the general category; 45% for reserved categories per AICTE norms Mandatory
Academic stream Any — commerce, engineering, arts, science, BBA, BCA or law No restriction
Entrance exam A valid CAT, XAT or GMAT score (accepted tests vary by institute) Mandatory
Final-year students Eligible to apply; mark sheets and pass certificate must be submitted before the deadline set by the institute Conditional
Work experience Not required for the two-year full-time programme; counts towards the profile score Optional
Age limit None prescribed by AICTE for the regular two-year PGDM Not applicable

The Academic Requirement, Explained Properly

It is quite common to hear that finance programmes are only for commerce graduates. That belief costs good candidates an application every year, so it is worth settling with the actual rule rather than with hearsay. The PGDM finance eligibility condition set by AICTE reads simply: a bachelor’s degree of minimum three years duration, with at least 50% marks. There is no clause about stream, subject combination or prior finance coursework anywhere in it.

Does PGDM Finance Eligibility Require a Commerce Background?

No. A BCom graduate and a mechanical engineering graduate meet the same criteria and compete in the same pool. Institutes actively build cohorts that mix streams, because a classroom where everyone thinks in the same way produces weaker case discussions.

The reality on the ground is somewhat different from the myth, in fact. Engineers frequently do well in finance electives precisely because valuation, derivatives and risk modelling reward comfort with quantitative reasoning more than they reward prior accounting knowledge.

So where does the quantitative bar actually sit?

At the entrance exam, not at the degree. CAT, XAT and GMAT all test quantitative aptitude and data interpretation heavily, and that is the real filter. A humanities graduate is fully eligible on paper and will need to put serious preparation into the quant section to clear the shortlisting stage. Fathoming the consequence of that distinction saves a lot of wasted worry: your degree does not disqualify you, but your exam score decides whether you get called.

How does PGDM finance eligibility work for reserved categories?

AICTE norms allow a five percentage point relaxation, bringing the requirement down from 50% to 45% aggregate for candidates belonging to reserved categories. Institutes apply this within their own admission policy, and several also relax shortlisting percentiles. Because individual institute policies are not always published, confirm the specific relaxation with the admissions office of each school on your list rather than assuming a common standard.

Can final-year students apply?

Yes, and a large share of every incoming batch does exactly that. You apply while your degree is still in progress, and if selected, your offer is provisional until you submit your final mark sheets and pass certificate. Institutes are strict here: failure to produce those documents by the stated deadline results in the admission being cancelled outright, not deferred.

Is work experience required for a PGDM in Finance?

Not for the two-year full-time programme. It is treated as a profile advantage rather than an entry condition, and it does carry weight in the selection score at most institutes. For context, 17% of IMT Hyderabad’s 2025 intake came in with two or more years of experience, which tells you the cohort is a genuine mix rather than a freshers-only room. Executive formats are the exception, since those typically require five years of managerial experience.

Entrance Exams Accepted for PGDM Finance

Meeting the academic bar only gets you to the application form. A valid entrance exam score is what puts you in the shortlisting pool.

Exam Conducted by Typical exam window Notes for finance aspirants
CAT The IIMs, on rotation Late November The most widely accepted test; quant and DILR sections carry the heaviest weight for finance shortlists
XAT XLRI Jamshedpur Early January Includes a decision-making section that many finance-oriented institutes value
GMAT GMAC, on demand through the year Year-round Useful if you are applying to Indian and international programmes in the same cycle; scores stay valid for five years
CMAT NTA Typically January or May Accepted by many AICTE-approved institutes, though not by every campus — check each one individually
MAT / NMAT / ATMA AIMA, GMAC and AIMS respectively Multiple windows Accepted at a narrower set of institutes; confirm before relying on these alone

Accepted exams differ by campus even within the same group of institutes. Always check the specific programme page rather than a third-party listing, and note that a strong XAT or GMAT score keeps most of your shortlist open if CAT does not go to plan.

PGDM Finance Eligibility and Admission at IMT Hyderabad

IMT Hyderabad was established in 2011 as part of the IMT group and runs a 30-acre residential campus in Shamshabad, roughly fifteen minutes from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

Its PGDM is approved by AICTE, holds MBA-equivalence from AIU, and is accredited by the NBA and by SAQS from AMDISA. The institute is an institutional member of AACSB and EFMD, and ranked 72 in the NIRF 2025 Management rankings, up 25 places from 97 the previous year.

Finance here is a programme, not a second-year elective bundle

Not everyone is aware of this distinction, and it changes how you apply. At IMT Hyderabad, PGDM (Finance) is a named programme with its own intake of 60 seats. You apply to it directly rather than entering a general pool and choosing a specialisation later.

Within the programme, the first year is common core across all PGDM tracks, and the second year opens into electives under a cafeteria model — 12 elective courses plus three core electives. The finance track carries roughly 19 to 20 specialised courses covering financial reporting and control, corporate finance, management accounting, financial derivatives, investment banking, risk management, wealth management, international finance and portfolio management.

Eligibility

  • A bachelor’s degree of minimum three years, in any discipline, with at least 50% marks in aggregate
  • A valid CAT, XAT or GMAT score
  • Final-year candidates are eligible, subject to submitting all mark sheets and the pass certificate to the Academic Programme office; failure to do so cancels the admission
  • Work experience is not mandatory
  • No additional academic requirement applies to the Finance programme compared with General Management, Marketing or Logistics and Supply Chain Management

The Admission Process

Stage What happens What to prepare
1. Application One online common application covers IMT Ghaziabad, Nagpur and Hyderabad. Application fee is ₹3,500 plus bank charges, non-refundable. Academic records from Class 10 onwards, exam registration number, statement of purpose
2. Shortlisting Profiles are assessed on academic performance across Class 10, Class 12 and each year of graduation, national test score, work experience and academic diversity. Nothing to do at this stage; consistency across your academic record matters here
3. Critical Thinking Test An on-campus written assessment of reasoning and argument construction. Practise structured writing on current business and economic topics
4. Personal Interview A panel interview covering your profile, motivation and awareness of your chosen specialisation. Be ready to explain why finance specifically, and connect it to your degree or work
5. Offer and confirmation Final offer issued, followed by fee payment and document verification. Keep originals and funding arrangements ready

What the interview panel is really testing in a finance candidate

Ask any member of an admissions panel, and they will tell you the same thing: the weakest answer to “why finance” is a salary figure. The strongest answers connect something you have already done — a commerce degree, an internship, a CFA Level 1 attempt, a stint in an accounts team, even a personal investing habit you can explain intelligently — to the specific work you want to do. Knowing the difference between equity research and corporate finance, and being able to say which one draws you and why, puts you ahead of most of the room.

PGDM Finance Fees: What Two Years Actually Cost

The total programme fee for the PGDM at IMT Hyderabad is ₹16,00,000 for two years, and that figure includes accommodation and mess charges rather than sitting on top of them. It is payable across five instalments.

Instalment When Amount
Year 1, first instalment On admission ₹3,73,000
Year 1, second instalment During year one ₹2,75,000
Year 1, third instalment During year one ₹2,55,000
Year 2, first instalment Start of year two ₹3,62,000
Year 2, second instalment During year two ₹3,35,000
Total Across two years ₹16,00,000

Scholarships

  • 40% merit scholarship for candidates entering with CAT or XAT at the 90th percentile or above, or GMAT Focus Edition 645+ (700+ on the earlier edition)
  • 20% Smt Leela Nath Memorial Scholarship for female candidates
  • Education loans are available from most scheduled banks against the admission offer letter

In practical terms, a candidate who clears the 90th percentile and qualifies for the merit award brings the effective cost down by roughly ₹6.4 lakh, which changes the return calculation substantially. It is worth treating the scholarship threshold as a target during exam preparation rather than as a pleasant surprise afterwards.

Career Scope and Salary After a PGDM in Finance

One could argue that this is the section you scrolled to first. The table below uses IMT Hyderabad’s official final placement report for the Batch of 2023-25, since function-level data at this granularity is rarely published in full by any institute.

Function Share of offers Average CTC Highest CTC
Marketing 45% ₹11.55 LPA ₹31.00 LPA
Finance 28% ₹12.30 LPA ₹31.00 LPA
IT and Analytics 14% ₹13.52 LPA ₹20.30 LPA
Operations 7% ₹10.80 LPA ₹16.90 LPA
Human Resources 1% ₹13.05 LPA ₹13.55 LPA

Two observations matter for a finance aspirant. Finance accounted for 28% of all offers, the second largest function after marketing, and it produced the highest single package of the batch at ₹31 LPA. Financial Services and Consulting was also the largest hiring sector overall at 36% of offers.

Who recruits finance graduates

Finance recruiters across recent batches at IMT Hyderabad include Goldman Sachs, D.E. Shaw, Morgan Stanley, BNY, Wells Fargo, Arcesium, Invesco, FactSet, Berkadia, Moody’s and CRISIL, alongside ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and the consulting practices of Deloitte, EY, KPMG and PwC.

How a PGDM in Finance compares with CFA, CA and FRM

These are not competing routes so much as different instruments. A professional certification deepens technical expertise in one domain. A PGDM adds management breadth, a structured internship, a peer network and, most practically, access to a campus placement process that no standalone certification provides.

Route Who can enrol Duration What it gives you
PGDM Finance Graduate in any discipline with 50% aggregate 2 years, full-time Management breadth, summer internship, campus placements, alumni network
CFA Bachelor’s in any discipline, or final-year student 2–4 years across three levels Deep investment and portfolio expertise; globally portable
CA Class 12 via Foundation, or graduation via Intermediate 4–5 years including articleship Accounting, audit and taxation depth with a statutory practice licence
FRM No strict prerequisite 1–2 years across two parts Specialist risk management credential recognised across BFSI

Plenty of candidates combine them. Clearing CFA Level 1 before or during a PGDM is common, and it makes the finance interview conversation considerably easier.

Conclusion

In many ways, PGDM finance eligibility is far less restrictive than the folklore around it suggests. A three-year degree in any subject, 50% aggregate, and a competitive CAT, XAT or GMAT score is the whole gate. What separates candidates after that is not their undergraduate stream but how clearly they can explain why finance, and how well they have prepared for the quantitative sections that decide the shortlist.

If you meet the criteria above, the practical next steps are straightforward: fix your exam target at the scholarship threshold rather than at a guessed cut-off, get your academic documents in order early, and be able to name the finance role you are aiming at before you sit in front of a panel. If IMT Hyderabad is on your list, our admissions team will happily walk you through the finance curriculum, the selection process and the full placement report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PGDM finance eligibility criteria in India?

A bachelor’s degree of at least three years in any discipline with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks (45% for reserved categories under AICTE norms), together with a valid score in CAT, XAT or GMAT. Final-year students are eligible to apply, and work experience is not required.

Can I do a PGDM in Finance without a commerce background?

Yes. AICTE norms place no restriction on the undergraduate stream, and institutes admit engineering, science, arts and BBA graduates into finance programmes every year. The quantitative demand shows up in the entrance exam rather than in the degree requirement.

Is maths compulsory for a PGDM in Finance?

There is no Class 12 or graduation-level mathematics requirement. However, CAT, XAT and GMAT all test quantitative aptitude heavily, so comfort with numbers matters at the shortlisting stage.

What percentile do I need for a PGDM in Finance?

Most institutes, including IMT Hyderabad, do not publish an official cut-off, and third-party figures vary widely. A useful benchmark is the merit scholarship threshold: IMT Hyderabad awards a 40% scholarship at CAT or XAT 90th percentile and above, or GMAT Focus Edition 645 and above.

How much does a PGDM in Finance cost?

At IMT Hyderabad the two-year programme fee is ₹16,00,000, inclusive of accommodation and mess charges, payable in five instalments. Fees across well-ranked PGDM institutes in India generally range from about ₹15 lakh to ₹30 lakh.

Can final-year students apply for a PGDM in Finance?

Yes. Admission is provisional until you submit all mark sheets and your pass certificate by the deadline the institute sets. Missing that deadline results in cancellation of the admission.

Is a PGDM in Finance better than a CFA?

They serve different purposes rather than competing. A CFA builds deep investment expertise; a PGDM adds management breadth, an internship and campus placement access. Many candidates clear CFA Level 1 alongside a PGDM.

Which entrance exams does IMT Hyderabad accept for PGDM Finance?

IMT’s official admissions pages list CAT, XAT and GMAT. Accepted tests can differ by campus within the same group, so confirm directly with the admissions office before you rely on any single listing.
